It is important to be careful with a dog’s diet as it can lead to obesity and is a growing issue. People do not realise that a slice of buttered toast is the equivalent to a burger, or one biscuit is like a whole packet to a dog. Owners must resist the urge to overfeed animals when they put on the sad face.
Excess weight can have many undesirable effects on animals including diabetes, joint, respiratory and heart problems. In addition, lack of activity and no reduction in food intake can quickly see a dog put on weight which in turn places weight on the limbs when walking which can lead to medical conditions arising in the future. This is where hydrotherapy can help.
Hydrotherapy is ideal for dogs following a veterinary weight loss and management programme, or that may just need to lose a few pounds and keep their weight under control. The low impact exercise in the water helps to reduce the strain on their joints whilst still burning calories.
Swimming is a great cardiovascular workout and when paired with a controlled diet can lead to fantastic weight loss results as well as building muscle and fitness levels. Due to the increased resistance when exercising in the water, it can burn four times more calories than walking in the same amount of time.
Hydrotherapy is a great way to help manage your dog's weight!
